I can’t quite believe I celebrate 10 years at Hunter Adams tomorrow. Not quite sure where the time has gone, but they do say that time flies when you’re having fun!
Approaching this milestone has led to some personal reflection on my career in recruitment to date.
I got my first job in recruitment 12 years ago. This wasn’t the original route I planned to go down after finishing university, though. I studied a joint degree in Psychology and Sociology which I really enjoyed, but I was unsure of what I wanted to do with my degree afterwards and decided to take some time out to decide.
My friend spotted that a well-known recruitment business was looking to expand its Aberdeen arm and according to her it had my name all over it! The rest is history and this is where my career as an HR recruiter began. I’ve continued in this career path because I love having a job that is rewarding and challenging in equal measure.
Recruitment is one of the most exciting and fast-paced industries to work in. Whether you’re securing someone a new job or closing a business deal; there is always something going on and no two days are ever the same.
This couldn’t be more true at Hunter Adams. I first joined the team here ten years ago as sourcing advisor, supporting our head of interim and sourcing placing junior level candidates throughout the UK. Now, in my new role as Recruitment Manager, I am placing senior candidates throughout the UK.
So what does a typical day in the life of recruiter involve, you might ask? Well the simple answer is that there is no typical day, because every day is different with new challenges. Finding that perfect candidate in the talent pool for a client can sometimes feel like finding a needle in a haystack.
There are days of searching for candidates through databases, connections and social media, sourcing and screening those who are suitable for the role set out by the client. But even after all that there is always the possibility that the client may not think the candidate would be a good fit, or the candidate themselves may change their mind about a role, so the cycle continues.
I often laugh at some of the perceptions of what it’s like to work in recruitment – many of my friends and family think I just talk on the phone all day whilst drinking coffee! And whilst that may be true to a certain extent, in reality the job of a recruiter is filled with unexpected events and their power lies in adapting to circumstances.
For me as a recruiter it’s all about the experience of the process that I give to our clients and candidates. I truly care about both. My job can be demanding, but it’s also satisfying and rewarding.
